the writers purposefully make it so the audience don't know for sure. Some where in the Midwest I think though.

This is an inside joke on the Simpsons; there are at least 6 states with cities named Springfield; on the internet, there's a site that says "Welcome to Springfield USA" and has a map of the Simpsons' home town. Even Lisa has made a joke that no one is sure what state they are in.

I've heard that it has never been told and that Springfield was chosen because it is a common town name in many states.

If you mean the "Simpsons", then the city is obviously Springfield.
