the writers purposefully make it so the audience don't know for sure. Some where in the Midwest I think though.

This is an inside joke on the Simpsons; there are at least 6 states with cities named Springfield; on the internet, there's a site that says "Welcome to Springfield USA" and has a map of the Simpsons' home town. Even Lisa has made a joke that no one is sure what state they are in.

I think it's like 35 out of the 50 states have a springfield so...yeah

I saw an interview a few years ago and there are hints to the actual state in each episode, but it's never been revealed.

I've heard that it has never been told and that Springfield was chosen because it is a common town name in many states.

If you mean the "Simpsons", then the city is obviously Springfield.
The state, however I believe is Illinois... ---101
