Is Compaq and HP the same thing?

either way if they are or arnt, what are som differences, and if they are the same thing, why 2 different names? info plz.

They merged about 2 years ago. They do have 2 brand in the retail segment, and it is solely to be competitive in that market. Some people like HP boxes some liked the Compaq's. In the past year or so, the components have become similiar so really no big difference prior to the merger. On the business side, they simply used the Compaq brand on the products that did well, and HP name on the other.. it is sort of funny seeing HP Compaq brand PC, server etc.

I work on them daily. The answer is actually no. Compaq, had alot of surplus parts. HP, bought them when they bought Compaq, HP does put Hp parts into anything braned HPs or Compaq is all Compaq. Even though its branded HP. But, Where and whenever possible they, HP, conister HP Parts to be "of lesser quality" so if you ever have an HP product and its been serviced by HP, chances are good you might have a "Like part" branded HP. Not to mention, there are alot of Compaq laptops out there, that have to be supported for 5 years under certain us laws, and have certain special parts. When HP bought Compaq, they also had to deal with all of their problems, such as pending repairs, servies and all warrentys and extended service contracts... so to sum it up, they are run by HP, but in side, they are Comaq till somewhere around 2009-2010. Personaly, Compaq made some pretty good laptops!! Desktops are so-so. Compaq, was orignialy founded by NASA, to make the little computers for the astronats and space shuttle computers and stuff.

H P just bought Compaq recently. I would suggest that the newer models may be the same but models from a year ago would be different. Aside from the OS the choices the two manufactures made in hardware and software were quite different, They were/are both Windows computers so the long and short of it is no matter which one you looked at they both did pretty much the same thing.

Yes, they are the same company now. They were founded independently. Then in 2002, HP bought out Compaq, and they keep the name for some products so they don't ruin the name recognition.

No they have similar products but some times vary different. However HP bought Compaq years ago.

They are the same company now -- compaq is just basically a brand now (a result of its acquisition by HP a few years back).

The decision to keep the compaq name is done purely as a brand decision.

But its my understanding that theyve kept both lines separate, whereas HP still maintains an edge of quality that it always has over compaq.

Compaq is pretty much right next to gateway as far as quality, reiability is concerned.
Heck, even Emachine has surpassed compaq.
