I would prefer four 10 hour shifts to be honest. 8 hours is too short. Most companys dont like the idea of 8 hour shifts, they cost more. 12 hour shift are easier because a company only needs two shifts if it is a 24 hour manned operation. Or one shift if it is a 12 hour manned operation.

Either people choose to work 8 hours or more than 8 hours. If you choose to, then it is not the employers fault. Personally I think work is stretched beyond 8 hours because a majority of the time at work is spent NOT working. Mingling with co-workers, answering emails.. etc

Not true for every person in every industry. I work in a small firm where most of the staff makes their own schedule. 2 of the people don't even come in every day, just whenever they feel like it. When I was in management, though, I worked 50-60 hours a week without exception, and they were often at odd times. It just varies.

i could work only 8 hours a day if thats what i wanted, but i choose to work a few early in the a.m. and stay a few more after 5. it's the best way to get ahead. 20 hours of overtime a week doubles your cash. your employer cannot force you to stay insane hours, but if you do the rewards are well worth it.

I am always bringing work home. If I don't do it then it makes more work day less productive, I am forced to spend less time with patients, I miss deadlines for paperwork and it adds to normal everyday job stresses. If I don't directly bring work home then time is spent outside of work reading research and professional journals. While this is not required as a condition of my employment it is essential to the care of my patients.
