it's not really that they were ugly, but as technology advances over the decades, we have better ways to take care of our skin and hair, and cosmetics and dentistry have become more advanced. They didn't really have highlights for their hair and hair coloring wasn't as smooth as it is now. Plastic surgery was also less common. They weren't uglier, they were just less fake.

no uglier than 400lb chicks wearing belly shirts....
yeah... people in the 70s were SO much worse...
