Unless they've adapted to become dormant and hybernate in the cold season's they usually die, leaving behind eggs or larvae that become active at the first sign of warmth!

Ants and all other insects are cold-blooded.. Meaning they gain thier body heat from an external source not internal....

They either hybernate or hang out deeper underground.
