Recently, a passenger in the back of my car told me I needed new suspension. How can I tell for sure? I've been paranoid that the car is bouncing more than it did, but I have no idea if that is even a tell-tale sign.

Rough ride in the rear of a vehicle can occasionally be the sign of worn suspension. visual inspection is also a good idea, look for leaking oil or for dust building up the oil may not be leaking enough to see but oil will attract any dust. If your vehicle has alot of miles it may also be time for new suspension parts. Uneven tire wear, cupping and or tire chopping can also be a sign of suspension wear. Alot of places will do a steering and suspension check for free with the hope that you will do your business with them..... You can always get a professional opinion and choose to do it yourself or have a friend do it for less but at least youl know what is wrong

Standard test is to bounce test the car. Put your knee on the bumper and bounce the car two or three times. Let the car rebound. Count the rebounds. It should only rebounds once. Inspect the shocks for leakage also.Any fluid dripping down the shock tube the shock is no good. Also is the car sit down in the back end with no one in the car? If so the spring maybe weak and need replacing

The bounce test is extremely unscientific. If your car has more than 50-70k miles on it and bottoms excessively or sags in the rear with any significant amount of weight in the back, replace the struts/shocks. At those kinds of miles and above they are usually pretty well worn anyway.
