great...i dont think it is a waste of money...just think of it, we need great ideas for our society to progress...people once thought that it was impossible to fly...but there comes the plane...people then thought it was impossible to reach the moon...but it was done...if everyone has a mind like yours, you will not even have heard of the name neil armstrong...

Giving that money to charity would likely be worse for everyone in the long run. We need to begin colonizing space so that the billions of people who will be born in the next century and in the centuries after have somewhere to live. Earth just doesn't have the room or resources to cope with 6 billion more people every hundred years. Too many people living in crowded conditions breeds disease and shortens lifespan, not to mention the environmental damage that that number of people would do, or the skyrocketing cost of building materials and cost of living in general that would accompany such rapid population growth. That means more people living below the poverty level. So giving the money to charity rather than building a moon base could actually create more suffering in the future. I know this sounds totally wrong, but it's reality.

What a waste of time it was inventing the wheel, when we could have just been carrying food for other people.

What a waste of time it was inventing the printing press, we would have been better off just writing faster.

What a waste of time discovering electricity, we would have been better off putting the effort into chopping more wood.

What a waste of money inventing the computer, better to give all that money to typewriter manufacturers.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Without pushing boundaries, mankind gets stuck in a rut, never growing, never becoming better than we are now. Moving beyond the earth, permanently, is maybe the most important thing we (the human race) will EVER accomplish. In 1969, we took our baby steps, then sat back down. Getting back there, and staying there, means we're ready to grow up.

no no no no no... Giving money to charity is a waste of money. It would benefit more people for much longer if the money were used for endeavours like a lunar base. Try to think of it not just on its surface but as an investment. The added technology from space exploration to date is in the trillions of dollars and the benefits to all of us is incalculable. Better agricultural processes, new better medicines, robotics, The sad fact is that giving to charities has become so exploited that the people you want to help don't get anything( did you see the report on CNN about the hunger relief in Africa)

Do you realize that almost 100 billion dollars has been spent a useless war. Can you imagine where we would be if we just barely dropped 100 billion dollars on the space program. We would have 5-6 brand new Orion ships http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_%28spacecraft%29
The moon base would be half way done and a manned mission to Mars would be under way since 2003.

What if we find a cure for cancer on Mars... ha j/k

Actually, it's a good idea. Charity is only a stopgap when Earth is overpopulated anyway. A base on the moon can be a first step to colonizing the solar system and beyond.

Actually it's a marvelous idea. The only way homo sapiens are going to survive eventually is to colonize space. First we wouls start close like the moon. Eventually we would colonize Mars. Earth will not sustain too much more population before the Earth is not such the habitible place it is today.

I think expanding our horizons and exploring the universe are necessary and fundamental human activities. Supporting charity is a good thing too, but I don't give all my income to charity and I'd guess you don't either. Not to get too political, but I can think of several other publicly funded activities whose budgets I'd rather redirect to charity.

I think it would be cool to live on the moon. Think of all the scientific research you could do in such a desolate enviroment. There would be so few limiting factors to deal with. Also you could probably make a super-powerful telescope that could see even farther than the Hubble Telescope.

i understand aliens already have a base on the moon and have told us to stay put.it will be interesting to see how this plays out.they see all our tribal warfare and nucleur weapons and dont want us running around the universe screwing everything up that we touch.
