Yes, several states have decriminalized marijuana for medicinal use. California is probably the most well-known - they passed a ballot initiative in 1997. However, possession is still a Federal crime. So even though the local and state authorities may respect the fact that you have a "prescription", the DEA can still arrest you. The DEA does not believe marijuana has medical value, and wouldn't care anyway, because they don't really like people very much and would just as soon let patients with debilitating illnesses suffer without treatment.

Some medications made from marijuana (I believe Marinol has been mentioned...there are others) have been approved for sale by prescription by the FDA. Some states, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington have legalized the use of marijuana leaf as a medication, requiring a prescription. Patients who use the drug do so legally according to state laws, but still violate federal laws.
There are seven people in the United States that legally smoke marijuana. They are members of an experimental program to investigate the uses of marijuana leaf as a medicine. The program was started in the seventies and closed in the early nineties, but the surviving participants still receive medicinal marijuana from the federal government.

This is a gray area and the government has no right to outlaw something like marijuana for any reason other than operating a motor vehicle or smoking in public. I no longer smoke but I believe a very large percentage of Americans do. America was supposed to be the land of the free but it really is not- sadly enough. Alcohol is much more harmful for people than marijuana and it is a sin for the govt. to keep it away from sick individuals.

It depends on the state you are living in, however it is against federal law so even if your state says its legal you can still be arrested under federal law.
