Basically the answer will always be 9 x the first digit (statement 1, proof of which is below). So the answer will always be a multiple of nine or zero. Notice how the same symbol is used for zero and all the possible multiples of nine in the table, so that you always pick that symbol whichever number you'd first thought of.

Proof of statement 1 follows:

If we define "a" as the first digit and "b" as the second digit, then the final total will be 10a + b - (a + b) = (10a - a) + (b - b) = 9a. QED.
