Gates who is being confirmed as Secretary of Defense was nearly indicted on the Iran Contra affair for lying to Congress for skewing intelligence. He negotiated to keep American hostages as prisoners during the iran hostage affair. He illegally advocated bombing the Nicaruagan ports.

He is a war hawk who is expected to send more troops to Iraq which is guaranteed to escalate the battles and lead America to further wars.

Will he be any better than Rumsfeld?

we need to do something , sh*t or get off the pot my Grandma used to say, we could win if we go in and do it and get out , or just get out and we are still win cause its not our war. And why is it so important that we win, they act like we are playing some kinda game but its not their kids fighting.

Gates isn't perfect but who the heck is in Washington? He hates the Neo Cons who got the US in this whole mess in the first place so that is a very good thing. The only problem is that as a Republican he can't make Bush look bad and any logical solution to the Iraq war is going to have to make the President look bad because there isn't any good way resolve the issue & I just don't know if Gates will do that or not. But Rumsfeld and everybody else in the Bush adminstration have made the new Defense Sec. job almost impossible.

If you have proof any American negotiated to keep the hostages held hostage I'd like to see it, because any such American would be guilty of treason, (that sounds more like a Bob Shrum/Jim Carville conspiracy theory thy came up with just before an election--that's why I'd like to see some FACTS please). The fact is nothing but running away with our tail between our legs will satisfy some people, especially teh Russian and Chinese governments supplying teh Iranians and Syrians with everything they need to cause chaos in Iraq and force us out of the region. Bush knows this is going on, when he said the USA must give up it's dependence on foreign oil he meant that if we are driven from the Middle East, that oil will be flowing to Russia, China, and maybe even India (if war doesn't erupt first). Try living without oil before you decide we should retreat from that region. Just because we leave the Middle East doesn't mean they will leave us alone, they are still determined to convert the world to their faith and knocking down what country they see as the biggest prize, the USA. Sorry, there is no easy button on this one.
