The biggest killer of an electric fuel pump is for it to run dry. They use the cool fuel that goes through them to keep them from overheating.
When you run out of gas, the fuel pump runs without fuel several times before the car actually dies. It maybe gets a bit of fuel and then you run off whats in the lines and vapor for a moment, then it gets a bit more, ect... Until you finally run out of gas completely and the car stops. Very hard on the pump.
I'd suggest that if you run out of fuel, not to try and start it back up. That will just hurt the pump even more.

New cars use the gas to cool the fuel pump and if you let the fuel get to low it overheats. Like any motor heat kills it.Plus letting the fuel level get to low you will suck up any rust or crap that get into your tank. This also kills the motor.Third if you forget to change your fuel filter it plugs up and the pump has to work to hard and again fails.
