Or naturalistic accounts of souls as mind/body is more tenable?
Are souls immortal?
Explain a lil, why or why not you choose to beleive or disbeleive.

Thanks.

Hey, lola. Since a soul or spirit can't be measured, recorded, touched, I guess it's all a matter of belief or even faith. Believing in something doesn't make it true tho, but it gives comfort to a fearful mind.....

There is no replacement for knowing. Jesus found something. Buddha woke up to something, or found something beyond describing. He stated "don't believe what I told you: taste for yourself and then see."

Only knowing erases all doubt.

I don't know about souls or spirits, tho much has been written on them....I know first-hand that consciousness/awareness is immortal....what is untouched by time and change? It's here before birth and it will "survive" after death.....it's closer to us than our breath and it is always n forever overlooked....it's not an object or a thing or a concept or anything impermanent, but all objects, things, concepts, arise and pass away in this space/awareness.....

Mind/body is a part of it, as is all things in this life....but this silent, formless, bliss-full presence is always there...shining like a diamond.

Even without all this talk, I think everyone has felt at least once in their life that they are something more than they perceive themselves to be...a moment in nature, or extreme pain or ecstacy, or a near-death experience, or just a sense of oneness or expansiveness felt when the mind let's go a bit....this could be called soul, or call it fred. It doesn't matter. It can be sensed by most sensitive people. Some ppl immediately build a fence of beliefs around it and put a label on it, thus "destroying" the essence of it.

Excellent question.

Everything has a soul spirit; animals, humans, trees... the planet is one giant mindset. Immortal means you live forever and is separate from scientifical analysis and philosophical theories, not religion. I believe in existence because I'm here, flesh, bones, blood... Do we live forever? The physical body doesn't, but the soul spirit does; Have you been to a funeral and after everything, you reminisce- go home and try to eat, and you can't. That person will always be with you in spirit- souls pass on every day, second and minute. I hope this answers your question; these are just my personal opinions based on experience. Thank you for your time.

added info: to the individual who gave a thumbs down, how many years do you have on you. I'm 35 and have studied these western and eastern mysteries for over 10 years. I suggest you read a book.

Well, getting down to it, the "soul" is basically that which lies in the brain. To me, it's basically the person's personality, which is constructed from a mixture of genetically-set traits and personal experiences, all kept within the brain using biochemical triggers and whatnot along with the person's conscience.

Since I believe that the "soul" of a person lies physically within the brain, it only makes sense that I do not believe in the afterlife. If the brain dies, the biochemicals that keep the person's personality and conscience intact stop their reactions between other chemicals, resulting in the death of that person, both physically and mentally.

(Simply, I believe in neither of the "normal" ideas for "spirits" or "souls," meaning that I don't believe that they are eternal.)

My believe ... Yes we have souls or spirits , I believe our soul is the compilation of all the experiences we have accumulated in a life time, from birth to death , I believe there are new souls and old ones , I account for the wealthy , easy come , good luck , as holders of new souls , they will go through life with out any major let down or pain , some will ,there are always exceptions , as painful loses . but for the majority rich people will go through life comfortably . My soul is an old one , through regression therapy I have started 2000 years ago and have returned to countless lives , in each one I have learned many things of value that I have used in the folowing life , and I will come back till the time that my soul has learned sufficiently to become a helping spirit to a new soul ,to gide him through life, to consecutive life's until he/she has learned all that is necessary , this believe can explain the suffering and richness of six billion people in this world , can explain the reasons of such grate pains , and happiness , it can explain the amazing abilities that some children display at too young an early age , and it can explain how I built a violin of first class at my first try with out any major training , this are things , knowledge that we Cary from previous lives . I also believe our souls interchange with new bodies in different civilizations in distant planets , it explains the tunnels of stars that are recollected by the temporary dead people that have revived after dying , once one pases to the other side there is no return , either went into a new body , different place , or the poor soul stays as a wanderer of a goustly place .

I think our soul and spirit is one in the same.I think the soul is immortal because the Bible tells us....The reason i choose to believe? i have been very down and out at times, and i have had to endure some very hard situations in my life...I have really been to the point of giving up and i would close my eyes and just talk to God,and I feel a warming sensation of peace that comes over me,and I feel Gods presence.and I feel comforted...I hope this helps some...

what you are as a human being defines your soul...as far as being immortal goes that only last as time goes on..and you start to fade away.. if you were immortal they probably make a statue in your likeness ..and you know what that means.. y'all have every pigeon in the city crapping on your head...

We have both souls and spirits. The Bible answers these questions, but not explicitly. The writer always presume these exist and writes about them without questioning their existence. The Preacher of the book Ecclesiates writes of bodily death, in chap.12, verse 7:
"then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."

The word 'spirit' always refers to 'breath'. We see it in English in the words 'respiration' which means 'breath again', and in 'inspiration' which means 'breathed in {spirit (as in art and music)}'. The original Hebrew and Greek have the same meaning. Now, breath can come and go. It is temporary, even though it may last a lifetime. The soul is a different matter from the spirit, although it if very difficult to distinguish them intellectually or by the heart's discernment. In the book of Hebrews chap.4, verse 12, we find:
"For the word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit . . ."

These are some distinctions I have gathered:

The soul can be dead or alive, but it's not so with spirits.

Spirits do not die, nor do they begin.

One or more spirits can enter a person, and can be driven out, but not so with souls. Jesus commanded unclean spirits to leave people. But there is one soul per person - end of story.

It is the soul that needs to be saved, not the spirit. Jesus always spoke of the soul. He said,"What profit it a man to gain the whole wordl but lose his soul?" In the old testament it said "The soul that sins, that soul will die."

It is souls, not spirits, that are lost and need to be found.

The soul is eternal, yes, but if you are not saved, eternity consist will consist of unending perishing in the lake of fire. In the book of Revelations, chap.21 verse 8 it says," But for the cowardly and unbelieving and (other offenders) and liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." To confirm this is Isaiah's prophesy at the very end of his book chap.66:24, "for their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched."
But for those who do believe, eternal life! Joy and peace and everlasting love in the presence of the creator of rainbows and natural wonders and love itself. Rev. 21:4 it says, "and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying or pain; the first things have passed away."

By the way, there is no reincarnation. You get one pass on earth (Hebrews 9:27). You get one chance to chose salvation or reject Him. This is God's way. If Jesus's agony on that cross for your sake doesn't to draw you to Him, then what will? God has spoken through His Son. The reasoning is clear for those with ears to hear. May your consideration of the pain He suffered for your sake pierce through that which clouds the heart's understanding.

These are gleaning from the best source I have found.

souls and spirits are pretty much the same thing, it's just up to the person whether they believe in them or not.
