"Hey, Jude" - The Beatles
"Layla" (extended version, of course!) - Eric Clapton
something by The Who (which should it be?) My favorite is "Love, Reign O'er Me"
"C'mon Baby, Light My Fire" - The Doors
"Imagine" - John Lennon
"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" - my favorite version is the Supremes
"R.E.S.P.E.C.T" - Aretha Franklin
"Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
something by U2 - (my personal favorite is "With or Without You" but there are a lot of good ones to choose from)
something by Bob Dylan (my choice would be "Masters of War" or "Tangled Up in Blue")

Ok, those are all classics that appear on a lot of lists and they're all great songs.

Here are a couple of others I really, really like:
"I Can't Make You Love Me (If You Don't)" Bonnie Raitt
"Nobody Knows Me Like My Baby" Lyle Lovett
"The Chain" Fleetwood Mac
"What's Goin' On?" Marvin Gaye

And if I get started on Broadway songs, I'd still be typing tomorrow morning! (Starting with most things Sondheim ever wrote....)

''Pigs on the Wing'' (Parts 1&2)- Pink Floyd
''One''- U2
''Mannish Boy''- Muddy Waters
''Folsom Prison Blues''- Johnny Cash
''My Way''- Frank Sinatra
And the song Rolling Stone Magazine already deamed numero uno, ''Like a Rolling Stone''- Bob Dylan

Of these six I'd go with Dylan, there's probably never been a greater song writer in history than him. So long as his name is out there I feel fine tossing ''Blowin' in the Wind'' into the mix as well as ''The Times They Are A-Changin'''. We could go on all day about Bob's work though.

I guess in the end there really is no single '' best song ever'' for all people. Different folks like different things. Everybody has some song that means alot to them when to others it sounds as bad as *NSYNC... My personal favorite song which is the best ever in my mind is ''Hesitating Blues'' by the great Jelly Roll Morton, but that's just because I'm a jazz guy. If you want to think ''Super Freak'' is the greastest ever, go right ahead; you'd be wrong (and most likely stupid) but go right ahead.
