I am currently in college and on my mom's taxes. However, my fiance and I were wanting to have a "quickie" marriage before the actual one in order to get his military benefits. How would I be able to do this since I don't pay taxes? Do I legally have to tell my mother to take me off her taxes (she will go to our wedding, but I'm trying to spare an "it's too early" lecture)?

I didn't mean a quickie marriage, I just meant a quickie wedding before we have the real one.

once you are married she can no longer claim you on her taxes as a dependant. She is able to claim you now because you are single, living at home, she is providing more than half of your living costs, and are attending college.

You do not have to pay any taxes to get his military benefits - you are entitled to those once you are married.

Your Mom can claim you for this year, however, if your get married after the first of the year you will be on your husbands taxes. If you don't tell your Mom, she can get in trouble with the IRS by claiming a deduction she is not entitled to. The military benefits have nothing to do with whether or not you earn money.

When you get married she is no longer allowed to claim you on her taxes. PERIOD.

If you got married Dec. 31 of this year she could NOT claim you as a dependent for 2006. You would be filing joint with your spouse.

You will need to tell your mom if you are planning of filing taxes jointly with your husband. You can be a tax write-off on only one persons tax form!
