My HDTV has a native resolution of 1080p. If I am playing the 720p Xbox 360 games will it have to upscale to that resolution and if so what will I be losing in terms of quality and picture stretching, or distortion and speed. I do not know anything about this stuff would you plaease explain in detail? Thankyou

Will the choppyness and other bad things seriously compromise gameplay?

Imagine 720 horizontal lines of information. Somehow you need to fit the 720 horizontal lines of information to fit in a 1080 line space. Upscaling is the process of making it fit by intelligently adding lines of information to fill in the blanks. The intelligence in your TV is not perfect and you will notice some degradation in the video signal. You might notice some pixelation, fuzzy edges, maybe choppiness in fast video.

Since 720p and 1080p are both 16:9 widescreen formats, you will not notice any type of stretching.

In order to get the best possible image with any TV or monitor, the native resolution of the display device and source need to be the same. This is the disadvantage of buying a high resolution TV.

That is why those upscaling DVD players are marketing hype and not worth buying. They are upscaling from 480p to 720p or 1080i.

On a side note, downscaling is the opposite. Removing data instead of adding data is more foolproof. You always rather send a higher resolution signal than your tv. For example, sending a 1080p signal to a 720p TV.
