When I was about 5 years of age, I was a internee of a Japanese Prison Camp in Hong Kong. All of the Foreigners were interned there. There was torture, beheadings and of course hunger. While everyone feared the beatings, I remember the hunger most. It was constant and your every thought was about food. We drank lots of water to try to stop the pain and rumblings in our stomach. I guess that was privation.

Privation is any type of denial of needs or freedom. privation can mean restriction of going out and in , restriction of food and visitors, and whatever, or even sex.

Prisoners routinely endure privation. So do monks and strict religious.
