Why did the British refer to the French & Indian War as the "Great War for the Empire"?

To those of us in the US, the French & Indian War was a series of battles that took place on the frontier.

But to the French and the English, the French & Indian War was global. It was the war that would determine if France or Britain would colonize the known world.
