It seems pretty unfair, considering how underappreciated teachers are already. I want to be an RN and if I get an associates degree I could make a lot more than a teacher with a 4 yr degree or even a higher degree and although I enjoy getting paid more, I feel its not fair to those who continue their education further. Was I looking at some bad figures or is it the ugly truth?

The ugly truth. Teachers start at $30,000-approx. $45,000 in California. Even teachers who have Master's degrees and have taught for 10+ years are only earning $60,000. Teachers have always been underpaid. People become teachers because they can't think of any other career to go into, they really enjoy teaching, they really enjoy working with the students, or they just picked learning how to be a teacher because it is somewhat easy to learn, but extreamly hard to be a fantastic and effective teacher.

Teachers have always struggled to get decent pay and benefits. Teachers usually work for the government and are payed by the taxpayers. Whenever there needs to be a tax cut lawmakers and politicians go after teachers. As a teacher I have read many articles in the news paper on why teaches should get payed less and not get the benefits we get. Teachers not only teach children how to read, write and add. We also teach children manners and social skills. Schools are raising many of todays children. Teachers are not the only ones involved in education, the school custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, bus drivers, and teachers assistants are also involved are also underpaid. There are school districts where teachers are well paid and receive good benefits. These are districts where teachers are advocates for themselves and have strong unions. Parents are involved also.

Because government jobs in general don't pay much salarywise. However, government jobs usually offer excellent benefits, which teachers do get.
