A full term pregnancy lasts 40 weeks (280 days), broken down into 13-week trimesters, starting from the first day of your last menstrual period. That's right, you haven't even conceived in what physicians consider to be the first two weeks of pregnancy. You might as well get used to this idea now: Your first day of pregnancy is the first day of your last menstrual period. Ovulation usually occurs two weeks after that, and most women conceive during that time. So as if thinking you may be growing a human being inside of you isn't confusing enough, you are already two weeks pregnant on the day you conceive!
Ultrasounds done in the first trimester are extremely accurate, the way they figure the due date is how big your uterus is and how long the baby is on average.
I hope this solves a little bit of your confusion, and congradulations.

ultra sounds determind how far along u r by the size of ur baby with all the measurements they are the most accurate form of telling exactly how pregnant u are. also if this will make u feel better my due date is may 23rd 2007 and i just entered my 16th week today. that should put u 4 to 5 weeks behind me. u can tell also how many weeks u r by looking at the calendar and counting from the first day of ur last period. for example mine was august 16th we will say that is a monday for now that means that every monday starting one week from that day u gain a week. its weird that u start counting weeks even before u techniquly concieve but that is how it works. i hope that i did not confuse u more good luck.

I know exactly how you feel. Going by my last period I should be like 9 weeks pregnant or so. I am only 6 weeks according to an ultrasound. I asked my doctor and she scheduled me for another ultrasound next tuesday to see if the baby has a heart beat or what is going on. When I had my first ultrasound on Nov 24 I should have been 6 weeks, so when they didnt see a heart beat I paniced. She said that I measured at only 4 weeks 5 days. I know it is worrisome, but just trust the ultrasound and your doctors. Good luck!

If it's only a week or two difference, stop worrying. There is a two week leway anyway for human error and not knowing your last period. Plus Ultrasound this early can be wrong, as you get further along you will get a more accurate date with the development of the baby. I wuld go by what you think you are based of your last period and possible conception dates.

The ultrasound is very good to detect how far along you are. Actually, the best. This way the doctor can measure your baby and to find gestational age. Once he finds this he can find out your last menstral cycle and when the date is due from there.
Formula:
Last Date of Period + 1 year - 3 months = your due date

I would believe the ultrasound. It may be off a couple of days but not a week. Once the baby gets a little bit older then he will be able to really tell you or it could stay the same. Mine went from the 16th to the 15th to the 17th and then back to the 16th. She was born on the 10th but it was induced. lol!
