This might sound like a stupid question but oh well. Were there telephones in the 1960's? If there weren't then what did people use to communicate? I need this information for a paper I'm writing. Thank you!

We used tin cans and string! It was very difficult finding enough string to make long distance calls, but somehow we did.

Yes, there were phones in the 1960s. However, there were no phones in the 1560s, 1660s, 1760s.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in the late 1800's. Yes, we have had the telephones for a looooonnnnnggggg time. Remember your old WW II movies? Remember the big black things they used to pick up and talk into? Those were telephones in the 1940's. Did you ever see someone crank the weird box on the wall and talk into it? That was a telephone from the twenties and thirties. They even had telephones in the 50's.

yes there were phones in the 60's, most had a rotary dial. Push button phones were really cool...only "rich " people had them because you had to pay extra for "touch tone" service.. And they all had wires, no cordless or cell phones. People would buy super long cords for phones so they could walk around the house, and they would get totally twisted up. You's have to hang the handset upside down from time to time so it would untwist itself. I still have an old black desk phone that has a dial. It sounds really cool when it rings, it actually has a bell and "rings", no beeps or tones. People think its really cool in a retro way.

Of course they had telephones. I think they were just rotary dials. No push button or cordless, and alot of times, you had a party line which was when you had to share the same phone line with 1 or more houses. I bet that wasnt fun. You had to wait for someone in another house to hang up. YUK!

Telephones have existed since the 19th century (the 1800s). You can see some images of earlier models on this site:

Yes, they were black, heavy and had a circular dial on them with the numbers. In the late 60s plastic came about and then they came in lighter models and prettier shapes and colors.
