Since I was a child, we always went to Grandma's house on Christmas Eve and opened the gift from her. My children, ages 2, 13 and 19 actually get to open TWO gifts on Christmas Eve...a new pair of jammies EVERY year, and then another small gift of MY choosing. I think they'd be VERY disappointed without their new jammies! I think that is their favorite part of C.E....
The rest of the gifts are opened first thing Christmas morning as soon as everyone is awake...

When my sons lived at home, we made a tradition to open at least one gift on Christmas eve. We did this because we used to sit around (as we did with my family when I was a child) and talk about Christmases past - the fun part, the not so funny parts. We would play games and try to wile away the time because we were just too anxious to sleep.
By opening a gift on Christmas eve, we were able to stifle some of that excitement. After about an hour or so, our curiosity somewhat dulled, we all would go to bed and sleep soundly until the next morning.

If you're visiting someone on Christmas Eve, then you can open the presents from them that day and they can open yours.

Yes, that's usually when we open them. After midnight, of course, so I guess it's technically Christmas. :) We usually save the stockings for Christmas day.
