Hi,

For some strange reason today after I restarted my computer I got a message about the Windows XP firewall being switched off (the little red X in the bottom) but...when I click on it, the firewall is turned on, not only is it turned on but the option to turn it off is greyed out and I believe it's interferring with my ICS, none of "Exceptions" or "Advanced" options work either, all greyed out.....how can I fix this?

Thanks to everyone who's replied so far, BUT....I am already logged in as Administrator, I'm well aware that Windows Firewall isn't the greatest that is why it was previously off but has now somehow turned itself back on again, I've tried a link that was posted here (can't remember who posted it) but that isn't like my problem at all, I don't mean to sound rude but it's VERY important I get this working, so for those who didn't read it properly the first time........The ONLY problem I have is trying to disable Windows XP Firewall but the option to switch it off is GREYED OUT, meaning I CAN'T CLICK ON IT, I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.

You could just switch firewalls. I was told Windows Firewall is not good, and doesnt work that good either. I used to have it, I still do, but as of right now I am using Zone Alarm Pro, no problems. It's a program that you actually download, instead of Windows Firewall that is already in XP.

first impression of your problem: what else is new?

try installing the free trial version of WindowsLiveOneCare that on a regular basis turns off/disables the xp firewall on its own as it has a newer, stronger, and better firewall built in. The windows Live One Care program free trial will last for 90 days good luck fixing the problem.

Windows XP Firewall isn't the best firewall to use. I recommend switching to a free one like zonealarm. http://www.zonelabs.com For the problem, you probably have a virus or spyware interfereing with your firewall. You can try a virus cleaner from http://www.avast.com and a spyware removal tool from http://www.safer-networking.org God Bless and Good Luck.

Maybe you don't have the permission to turn your firewall off. try to log on as an administrator account an change the option.

if you're not member of a domain, you can't see the administrator account. when the welcome screen appears. press Alt+Ctrl+del 2 time and then put the administrator account in the username if you don't know the password try a blank one first. if it doesn't work. you better remember the password. and then try to turn your firewall off. good luck

Windows XP firewall is weak. I suggest zonealarm free version. It is really good.
