Religions and traditions are not necessarily a leading cause of poverty. I believe India has relatively few natural resources for such a large country. Most important, India has neither a form of government nor an economic system that is conducive to creating a large middle class and fewer people in poverty.

It is possible that religion and traditions stand in the way of changing over to a better economic system.

I would go a lot with what our economist friend Salim K has written here. But if that is the reason why this is happening, I would like to add what can be done to resolve this?

I believe the answer lies in the Indian bureacracy and the politicians. These people should come up with some innovative ideas and change the scenario so that "distribution of wealth" happens. Globalisation and privatisation are not magic formulae to change things, though this has helped in money flow in the last few years - but this flow of money is largely happening in the upper segments of the society.

I totally agree the goal should be to create a big middle class society - this should be focus.

under developed nature of indian economy is the main cause of poverty.following are some factors which highlight the under-developed nature of the indian economy and therefore poverty of the masses: 1. low level of national product:net national product of india is miserably low compared to its size of population. low per capita income is the obvious consequence 2. heavy pressure of population: it's the rapidly increasing population that offsets the effect of increase in production. this is mainly due to fall in the death rate and more or less stable birth rate, for the last many decades. 3. inflationary pressures:less developed economies like india are often caught in the cobweb of inflationary pressures.it means a situation of persistent rise in prices.thus, the poor tend to become poorer still.

My attempt to put my Degree in Economics to some use.

there is a lot of wealth in India. The problem is that people in India hoard everything. why they hoard deserves another Question, but hoarding does not circulate the "Rupee" the usfulness of the Rupee comes to a sto[p as soon as it is hoarded.
EG: If a person earns a "Rupee" and keeps it under a mattres than this rupee is effectivly out of circulation. If he spends it and buys a cup of tea than the Rupee is useful the tea shop owner. If the Tea shop Owner goes out and buys a ballon for his child than now the same coin has been useful to one more family. and so the Rupee circulates and does it's proper job.

My sister (a canadian) is married to a very humble Indian. this gentleman without fail send some money to his mother at home in India so that she can treat herself to some treats, chiclets etc.
I was fortunate to visit Egypt and the Lady from India met us in Egypt to see her daughter in law.
As an Economist I asked her what she used the money (her son was sending as gift each month)for and I was surpirsed to hear that over the twelve years she has not spent a penny!! (Her ticket to Egypt was sent by her son) It is out of habit to save and thus takes money out of circulation. The bank and government are not trusted by the masses.
Please search on Yahoo for "distrubution of wealth" and this will give you many other ideas why Indians seem to be poor but really are not. Remember that there is much Gold hoarded in the name of Jewllery for Religious and Cultural reasons. this does not help because the Jewellery just sits at home and not worn by women. It is kept for dowery purposes for the next generation or is cashed by the poor for day to day living.

I hope this Ans. is useful to you.

The reason for poverty in india is Religion and Caste. As nowadays each person who are rich give the smallest post to the person he dont know properly and gives a good post the person he knows well. And that must be the reason.

India had been ruled by foreign powers for long time. They were worried about making money than the welfare of Indians. They were interested in raw material, their factories need so that they can sell that product back to India and make profit. They wanted Indians to have just enough education that they can do their clerical jobs, nothing more. That is main reason that our people are poor.
