For the young children play dough. It is cheap and fun. You can also get together some old cookie cutters you have or buy a huge lot of them for very little money and give them a little gift bag with the play dough and cookie cutters.

If times are really tough you could make the playdough - just get a recipe online and add in something to make it really special such as a scent, or glitter, etc.

How about making those fleece blankets. The kinds where you cut the ends and tie the knots? You can get directions online easily too. They are always nice to have and cuddle up too.

Cracker Barrel has adorable Christmas ornaments for only a couple dollars.

A cool jar from the dollar store, filled with homemade cookies and a cheap ornament on top is a perfect gift. Wrap it up beautifully and you have a great present for just a small amount of money.

Good luck! SD

How about talking to the adults and letting them know there won't be any Christmas presents this year? Stick with buying gifts for the kids. Make it one gift per child.
Other ideas...one gift per family (out to dinner, movie passes, etc...) or do a gift exchange with the adults. Perhaps many of the adults feel obligated to buy gifts for everyone and would appreciate someone stepping forward and suggesting a gift exchange.

I would give the adults ornaments. You can get them pretty cheap at certain stores, especially Kohl's when they have the %50 off sale every week.
As for the kid, go to the dollar store and buy a few books. Tie with a ribbon and that's it. Still thoughtful, but cheap.

Be honest with everyone! Ask them to provide you gift ideas within a specific dollar range. I do this with my kids (grown up now) every year. They don't mind. And it makes sure I stay in budget. Just tell them you'd like to buy them a gift but are on a limited budget. Other people really do understand!

Small toys, books, CDs, videos/DVDs, small vials of cologne or perfume, baked goods (bake 'em yourself!), little Hallmark ornaments, gloves, scarves, hats, small radios, homemade felt ornaments.

Once I made for my co-workers gingerbread men and women that looked like them!

Have I got an essay for you! I published it in a small New York newspaper last year:

There are a lot of great recipes online for special holiday breads, etc, and you can gift them in nice baking dishes, or on plates that your friends can keep.
