This is a very good question. However, the answer depends on the species in question. Several species that have submersable eggs will overwinter as eggs at the bottom of frozen ponds, and others will simply hibernate (go into Diapause) as adults. Diapause is a complete metabolic shutdown, many insects perform this adpatation in order to survive the winter months.

My guess is that the larvae is dormant due to temp. and wakes up at the appropriate time. In some parts of the world they live and breed year round.

Mosquitos only live one season. They will lay eggs and die, leaving the eggs to hatch by themselves the next warm season.

Their eggs are lying dormant in stagnant water somewhere waiting for the first sign of spring.

They larva or whatever probably go dormant, and the adults die.

If it's cold enough like here in Canada...they die.
