NASA has announced a new base on the moon which is supposed to be built starting in 2019.

American politicians has given these sort of promises before. What do you think the next lot will give for cancelling this mission and do you think it will add to the reputation of Americans of being quitters when the going gets tough?

That's a pretty sad attitude to have when you 'predict' failure 13 years from now !!!
Everyone needs a break from Y/A sometimes. .. .maybe now's your turn !!

Come back refreshed !!

Statements like moon base make the USA citizens feel good about themselves... although tbh I'm stunned at the success of Spirit and Opportunity on Mars... and the probes/satellites too, both NASA's and the ESAs.

I can't comprehend how a moon base would give any worthwhile return at all... minimal scientific value as already have moon rock samples ect - publicity stunt for feelgood factor / improve US confidence. It won't happen like you say - simple because theres no value in it. You might as well build a base at bottom of the earths ocean.

Money's better spent on next generation satellites and probes.

They spend 500 billion dollars every year on their armed forces so they can easily afford to build a moon base. Why they NEED a moon base is anybody's guess. Last time they were up there, they left a car and some golf clubs.

I think it's just a sort of morale booster for them, American morale is at an all time low and they need something to make them feel good. We should feel good, too. Space exploration is exciting and dangerous. Let's hope they can pulll it off.

Maybe they can meet some bad aliens up there and start blasting them?!

That they have discovered wate on the Moon and that the Moon boots, as worn by the Moon walkers, are not suitable for Moon walking. Well, not in the wet anyway.

But the head nut down at NASA has nipped off down the WalMart, where they sell everything, including wet boots for a wet Moon.

Put WalMart in charge of NASA, then we will have shops up there in no time at all, water or no water.

Waste of money.

"Will it add to the reputation of Americans being quitters when the going gets tough?" Who cares? Americans have a number of other costly things to worry about besides a moon base or gossip about them from other countries.

The moon base, will be too far from our American defenses. To build, such an object, would be constantly under attack by the chinese and russians. Also, to build, or even research the possibility, major taxes, and money would be raised to even start thinking of such and object. Also, America, has and always will be united, even though the resources are unknown on the moon, we couldn't risk people to far away from our United Citizens. It would be fair to ask people to leave earth, let alone the U.S. Even if so, the possibilty of failing would be to great, it could be an even greater risk of human life than in wars.- possible answer, not my opinion

When they realise Astronauts will each need more than one bottle of water (less than 100ml in a clear sealed container) they'll have to cancel the missions as the shuttles will never get past security.

What does it accomplish and does it justify spending billions to trillions of dollars to achieve this unknown goal?
