It's the intent. It's almost always used disparagingly.

Same reason 'Jap' is considered a derogatory word for a Japanese person- even though it makes sense as a shortening for a word, it is used scornfully as an insult, not because someone doesn't want to pronounce the whole word. At least, that's how I usually see it used- bashers and angry people say 'homo', not friendly, pro-gay people.

It's the spirit in which the slang is used.
Personally, while I have been referred to by that word (homo) several times, I take no offense. It's only when people start with the queer dyke f a g g o t punk bulldagger nonsense, that my redneck starts showing.

It's the connotation behind the word that is considered negative. You can make any word derogatory by saying it with hatred.

Why are words sometimes considered derogatory when they are just made out of letters.
Usage and history is everything when it comes to offensive words.
Example, most people don't like being called dick, but for some people that is their name. Odd, eh?

So it would be all right to call my cousin a homo since he's homophobic, and homo is just short for that?

Actually it's not. Neither is Queer. Fa**ot is, although I personally could care less. gearbox could go either way, mary refers to the queen types, they love saying that. The english call us" Poofters " and frankly I don't have time to be offended, I'm to busy laughing. And finally, It's better to be a fruit than a vegetable. You go girl.
And by the way, a homo is short for Homo, sexual. Not homophobic.
