When I worked at a Christmas tree farm, we used a flat bottom plastic bowl and 2 1x4s. Cut 3" off the bottom of your tree right before you are ready. Take a dab of silicone and put it on the bottom of your tree in the very center. Should cover only an inch or less, do not use too much! Place the plastic bowl over the silicone then nail the two 1x4 boards criss-cross onto the bottom of the bowl. It sounds harder then it is. The nail should be long enough to go through the two boards, the plastic bowl and up into the bottom of the tree, 4" or so should work. The 1x4s should be about 2 feet each, that would be about 12 inches out on each side. Cover with tree skirt. The silicone keeps the water from leaking out. The bowl should hold a gallon or so of water. You can get flat bottom bowls in the pet area or the lawn and garden part of a store besides the kitchen departments.

All we ever use is a 5 gallon pail, which you can get at any restaurant. Place the tree in it, then add some 6" to 8" rocks around the base, then fill up the rest with 1" to 2" gravel and add some water. Throw a Christmas tree skirt, or even just a nice piece of material around it, and Voila! It's done! If it's an exceptionally large tree (taller than 7' or 8'), maybe use a bigger pail.
Merry Christmas!

Buy a stand. They usually have 3 or 4 screws that hold the tree in place. You will need the stand so that you can water the tree. Water it often, most likely every day for the first week or so.

Buy one. So much simpler. If you can buy a real tree then I think you can buy a stand.
