If a ball joint breaks on a car while it is turning into a parking space can it throw the car out of control and/or cause one or more brakes to lock up? Even if the tire does not fall off ? Will greasy or oily substance be thrown over the front of the car and on the tire opposite the one with the broken ball joint?

The brakes locking up are actually the wheel jammed against the frame, yes you are out of control as have no steering with the ball joint broken, at least not enough to move the wheel much, and the oil could be caused by the control arm or spindle busting a power steering hose, or oil line. Power steering is under up to 700 lbs of pressure, especially when turning the wheel to park or try and drive after the ball joint broke. Possible that it sprayed out then. 700 lbs pressure can spray oil a good ways under the right circumstances. Other possibility is that the control arm or spindle broke a freon line. That has oil in it as well and under "plenty" of pressure and will spray for up to a minute or more if busted.

yes it is possible...I"m not sure about the oil being thrown all over the front of the car thing...as anything that may have broken to send oil anywhere such as a steering hose should send oil some places...but not on the front of the car. Brakes locking up...well it will put the broken side in a bind and make it seem as the brakes locked up....this is an odd question...but I'm guessing this happened to you so you tell me...did a ball joint break and cause all of this damage?

i'm gonna have to say no, if your ball joint goes the tire will come lose and the car will slam down either on the tire itself or snap loose and fall onto the brake rotor. As for the oil being thrown on to the car I dont think so unless you broke a break line and I still dont know how it would get on the front of the car.Now there is grease in the ball joints but nothing that would ever be thrown around. If it's the factory ball joints they usually dont even have zerk fittings to grease so the amount of grease would be even less.

Yes,a ball joint breaking while the car is moving can cause it to go out of control, lock up the brake/wheel on the side that broke(at slow speed tire not likely to fall off). Grease will get on the wheel and inside the inner fender(not likely to get on outside paint,or opposite side tire).

i own a repair shop, and no it wont do all of that just from a ball joint breaking on it,,if the rack and pinion unit fly's apart on it there will be an oily substance thrown around a little,,but not from just breaking a ball joint, something else happened to it ,to cause this,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,PS it will lock a brake up on it though.good luck.

no no no no basically no. ur car shouldnt be going fast enough for it to be thrwon out of control. ur brakes wont lock up; the only thing is that it will feel sluggish because the tire is rubbing ont he wheel well, or the underside of ur car is on the ground. and no, there wont be any liquids coming out of there unless you broke the brake line. then it might be able to squirt everywhere if you hit the brakes hard enough. lol did this happen to you?

No fluids would be thrown anywhere but you would definitely have a steering problem right away. There is grease in the ball joints.

It doesn't sound totally out of the realm of possibilities. Not knowing the speed nor whether or not the brakes were applied and how hard.
