How can I make any friends when I don't party hard, drink alcohol, or smoke?

Question

I'm a college freshman and, although the semester is almost over, I still haven't made any friends...I get the impression it's because I'm not into partying all the time, drinking alcohol, and smoking...and I don't plan on changing that for anyone! Still, it is very deppressing sometimes especially when I need someone to talk to, given that I am 7 hours away from home! I honestly have no friends at all & it's proving very hard for me to make new ones...and on top of everything else, I am shy!

HELP, please...

i guess you just need to make an extra effort. i was a heavy drinker before and then i stopped. not a drop for 2 years. my friends were worried i was going to be a party-pooper but i convinced them that i can still have fun and be fun without alcohol. it's hard at times, specially when they're drunk already and i'm the only one sober enough to realize that they're being too loud. but i guess the bottom line is, they don't force me to drink, i never attempt to change them too.

the problem in your case is overcoming shyness. try just saying hi and smiling more often first. when you're used to that already, starting a conversation with others would be easier. and here's a tip that never fails: be a good listener. sometimes everybody wants to talk and if you're a good listener, they'll return the favor to you when it's your turn to talk.

Look around campus and join a student organization that supports something you believe in. I understand about being away from home and not having friends. All my friends are in another state (which is why I am on-line now). If you don't look for a friend, you won't find one. Speak to people in class, say hello to people you see on the sidewalk. A few people may be rude, but some won't. You have to put in some type of effort. Trust me, I know.

aww, well i dont know if this will help at all but ill try
im a sophmore in high school (10th) and i dont do any of those things.
but then again im not that much of a shy person
but just try talking to ppl that u mite not talk to and get to know them and hey! maybe they dont party hard, drink or smoke

Venture out and find people that dont smoke etc etc. There are those type of people out there, you just have to find them. Yes, that is kinda true, alot of people are friends in college because of partying hard, drinking, and smoking, but if you go out and find people to be friends with that dont smoke or drink, it should work out good.

If other students in school can't except you for what you choose not to do in your life, you are better off without them as a friend.

Maybe go to the Library and check for some possible friendships there. Good luck

That'll be tough because going out and having a few beers will make it easier to have fun and make friends. Clubs and bars are a good place to meet people. Drop your guard and go have a few...you don't have to get carried away or anything but a couple isn't going to kill you.
