Mine is 'The Black New Yorkers'. I had no idea that my people had such a rich history in all the 5 boroughs of NYC, dating back to slavery days. They even had the written records of businesses down in the Wall Street area owned by black men and women. And the pictures were wonderful. I found myself traveling to some of the sites just to see if these places still exist(like, did you know the 1st African-American elementary school in NYC was right across the street from the big New York Public Library on 42nd and 5th aves?) It was just a really great read-so great, I read all 500-plus pages in less than a week!
What's yours?

Great question, and I suspect for most voracious readers, a hard one to answer. But I will offer one of my all time favorite books: The Mill on the Floss, by George Elliot. The story is a classic example of how in life we're often faced with the conflict of whether to follow our duties or our passions. Read it to find out which one Maggie Turberville decides on.

I even have examine and studied the Bible in English and the NT in Greek and English and have examine the Quran and assorted Buddhist and Hindu writings besides as those of the classic philosophers and Taoists and others. i think of that the hassle-free ideals are a demonstration that there is a few thing even some one divine and that analyzing the scriptures of different faiths can advance your individual!

I was really inspired by "Chinese Cinderella", although it has been many years since I have read it, I still think about that little girl. I am going to read "The Black New Yorkers'". I also like the book called, "Master of the Game". I think you might enjoy it as well.

The Chosen by Chaim Potok and Crime & Punishment by Dostoevsky were both extraordinary.
Also, in the non-fiction category, Why I Am not a Christian by Bertrand Russell. And Care for the Soul by Thomas Moore.

Sounds like a good one and to be able to see the places is wonderful for you. I read How Green is My Valley a few yrs. ago then remembered I had seen the movie . The book was soooo good and I felt like I was there. it's amazing when you can feel like you know the people and the places and can relate to them. I was born in poverty ina coal mining town in VA. This story is set in a coal mining town in Ireland? Not really sure now but, it rang true and real for me. If you do decide to read it, enjoy. I'd love to read yours too.

I've read so many great books but the one that stands out right now is "Devita's Harp" by Chaim Potok. It has a great message and was the first book I read that showed the vulnerability of a child's mind to whats fed into it.

The Journey to the East, by Hermann Hesse. It's an amazingly affecting depiction of spiritual discovery and western cultural identity.
