I live in IL. I thought that the law states that an employee must take a break, even a 15 minute break, after six hours of work. My co-worker came to work at 7:00 a.m. today, and left at 2:00 p.m. with no break at all. I told her that I thought that this was illegal and she should look into it, but she didn't want to cause trouble with the boss. That is her choice, of course, but it got me to thinking about if this is really legal or not, should it happen to me.
Thank You. I would appreciate any answers that you may have regarding this.

Normally, if you work four hours, you're entitled to a 10 or 15 minute break... five hours a 30 minute break.... eight hours a one hour break and two 10 or 15 minute breaks.
Also, you can waive your breaks if you choose to, but should be forced to do so. It depend on the state laws and employer as well. Also, if you're on a salary it is different. What I gave you is for hourly paid employees.

As far as I know from my management experience. If the employee is under 18 (16 or 17 years old). The employee can work a maximum of 5 hours without a break. If employee is going to work more than 5 hours, they MUST have a 30 minute break at the 5 hour mark. Department of Labor is pretty strict on these laws. A minute worked over the 5 hour mark can be a HEFTY fine for the employer. Also, the minor employee can not work after 11pm if the next day is a school day. Now for adult employees. As far as I know, you do not have to have a break at all. But I've heard that they have to have at least a 20 minute break every 8 hour shift. Not sure on the details for this one.

Yes. A break is required.
