Greenland was un-occupied when the Vikings arrived. This is because they arrived during a warm period. The Eskimos knew about the place but didn't settle because the game they hunted stayed to the ice. When the weather reverted to normal and unrest occurred back home, the Vikings were almost wiped out. A few managed to struggle through and change life style, thereby surviving.

The Vikings arrived in Greenland in C.E.982. The Island was unihabbited when they arrived at the southern tip of the Island, this is where they built thier colony which prospered until the 15th century. They vikings did trade with nomadic native tribes descended from the Dorset Indians (referred to as "Skraelings" by the Vikings). Leif Ericson discovered the coast of Labrador (Markland) and made land fall at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland (Vinland ). There Ericson set up another colony, which remained for several years until the native Beothuck population (this is disputed, it could have be Inniut) destroyed the colony.

I read a few books on then a few years ago when I was bored.
Strange people. Very very tough though. There were Inuits there who did well when the Vikings got there. Yet the Vikings wouldn't consider changing. It was like they arrived in the middle of Winter with just snow and ice there, mostly ones who were running from crimes they did back home. They brought a few animals and their families. Again nothing but ice there. Any sane reasonable people would say lets find somewhere warm with some food. The Vikings saw all the ice and nothing else and said lets stay till spring and see what its like then. Strange. Viking law was weird too. It was ok to kill your neighbor and steal his family as long as you admitted it.

Where I live in the Alps, the harbor has over 20 families of
Viking shipbuilders. They are amazing really, comparably it
is true whatever legends one reads. The family that still goes
to New Brunswick has a restaurant in Milan that is dedicated
to the angel of ice flows. The legend that they tell is that the
Vikings floated back south without any supplies with they were
captured by the Polar bears, of a sorcerer that dressed bears
and taught them to hunt with guns. Once they got across the
ocean and the legend says they had a baby named Erickk
Leiff and he was partly polar bear strength who saved the world
from aliens and idiots. Whatever, their danish pastry is good.

No it was not inhabited when they arrived for it was way too cold. But if the Vikings had stuck in a flag, to everywhere they pioneered they would be pretty successful today. Norseman, Norway Sweden Finland the Scandanavian countries. They would own England today. Oh well, I guess their flag pole and property they founded was not important for their civilization. Oden or Thor was their G-ds.
