I am sure there are more horror movies released per year than any other type of movie. In this day and age with all the horrific things happening in the world, who in their right mind needs to go to the cinema to be even more terrified and grossed out? Is it just me or are there way too many Horror movies out there?

There are way too many bad horror movies being made. I am a huge horror movie fan but recently ,however, they have released any crap they can to make a buck.
The reasons people watch horror movies vary. Horror movies have always been a release for people. They often have political or social themes that say much about our society and our fears. Watch "Night of the Living Dead" while keeping that in mind. Sometimes they are just good scary mindless fun. Like a roller coaster, extreme sports, etc.

I read once that in times of war or hardship/poverty (think the Great Depression) there were more horror movies and more people wanting to see them.
The stuff in the movie was far removed from their everyday life, so it was escapism even if it was scary.
If the movie was a reflection of their hardships or even a movie portraying an easy life, both would not be escapism for the viewer. The first because it echoed day to day life and the second because the person might compare this fantastic screen life to their sad life.
The horror movie allowed the person to be scared, removed them from their current circumstances and just was entertainment.

Because they sell, are easy to make, and the fans are easy to exploit.

I am a horror fan myself.
These movies do not terrify me, or gross me out.
When I see it on the screen, I can enjoy myself, as opposed to when I see it in the world, when I am genuinely terrified and grossed out as you put it.

It might also have something to do with the fact that many horror fans are the type that after watching enough of these movies, want to make their own film, and often enough, do so.
I wouldnt be surpised if the horror genre held the highest number of amateur filmmakers as a genre, though I'm not quoting any facts.

It seems to me that there are alot more other types of films released every year other than horror but, to answer your question; people go see them because it's fun to be scared, like a roller-coaster ride!

Sorry to answer your question with a question? But what do you consider horror? I consider it something with a supernatural edge to it, not slasher or gore fest flicks. Even then I disagree that the number of horror flicks outnumber, comedy, drama, etc. There are most likely more drama flicks than any other.

We discussed this topic at school.. I'll tell you what my spanish teacher said to us, she said that we tend to search for it, that we have an inherent like for this kind of things, be it through movies, books, etc. And the fact that what we see and/or read is not going to harm us in any way makes it even more appealing.
To me it makes sense, why else would you go to see a movie like this???

There are way too many. I hate them too(you give me the impression you dislike them) They should release more comedies or romantic comedies. Love those.
