my frend gav me his old iPod and i cant put new music on it cuz on iTunes it says that i dont have a device?

i already had Itunes and stuff. can someone tell me how i can put songs on my iPod

Make sure yout USB cable is plugged DIRECTLY into the computer, rather than through a hub or keyboard.

If that does not do it,
go to apple.com and dowload the latest version of iTunes. The iPod should appear as an icon on the iTunes index on the left.

If all else fails you may have to "restore" the iPod. As far as I know, that will erase everything that's on there now.
