i had to do a debate on abortion (making it leagle, which i am actually against) but this is the papper i wrote...hope it helps
There are various reasons that women decide to have abortions. Some of these reasons include teenage pregnancy, rape, health risks, and failure in contraception.
Girls born to teenage mothers are eighty three percent more likely to become teenage mothers themselves, and sons of teenage mothers are 2.7 times more likely to become prisoners. Children of teenage parents are 50 percent more likely to flunk grades in school and are far more likely to drop out of school. Seventy percent of teenage mothers drop out of school, and they are twice as likely to be dependant on welfare. If these teen mothers chose abortion and then later in life had children we could reduce the number of children who have to grow up abandon and abused, in prison, drop out of high school and are un employed, and refrain from re starting the circle with the eight three percent of children that are likely to become teenage mothers
Children born to teenage parents are twice as likely to be abused or neglected. Children born to a mother, who was a victim of rape, could also be susceptible to being abused and abandon. A mother who has been raped and chooses to keep her baby will have to deal with the fact that every time she looks at her baby she will be reminded of that horrible incident. Leaving the baby to be more susceptible to being abandon and abused. Not to many years ago, a teenage mother in Rockford left her infant baby out side to die in the freezing cold, because she couldn’t handle being a mother and the responsibilities of having a child. Is it not better to get an abortion and let the baby go when it is still has no feelings and hasn’t been born, then to leave a new born infant outside to die?
If a female is raped by a male who has aids, and then becomes pregnant, not only will the girl have aids but the child that she is baring will also have aids. Is it fair to bring a human life into this world, with a deadly disease, that it will have to live with for the interity of its life? Is it fair that the child may only live to be six or seven years old if that? That the child will have to spend his or her whole life taking medicine? And more importantly is it fair that as soon as the child grows up, starts attending school, and has friends, has come to learn and love his or her family that he or she could die. Not to mention that his or her mother who will also have AIDS could also pass away leaving the child with no parents. I’m not saying that killing anyone or anything is rite, but isn’t it worse to bring a life into this world knowing that it is going to die already at a very young age and not get to life the full life that most people get to live, is that not already like murdering someone? The way I see it in a case like this it is better to get an abortion and not make a child endure the pain of growing up with AIDS.
If we make abortion illegal any woman who wishes to have an abortion may still do so. She will just have to do it herself like women did before abortion was legal. Some of the ways women aborted their babies were with knitting needles, turpentine, a hanger, bicycle pumps or any other toxin or sharp object. All these way to abort the baby are not good for the mother. Many women would die, and become seriously injured when trying to give themselves an abortion.
Many women have high risk pregnancies, meaning that there is a strong chance that either the woman who is already a “functional member of society” or the baby who has not yet been born, or both, are going to die either during the pregnancy, during birth, or after birth. Another reason women choose to have an abortion is because there is a high risk of health problems including the child being born with Down's Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, or a high chance of obesity, which can cause clogged arteries and heart failure when the child is older.
Adoption is another choice for a mother. However when a child finds out that he or she is adopted this can cause serious mental issues. Children who find out they are adopted have been known to have what is referred too as “adopted child syndrome”, children who are adopted are susceptible to having problems such as, attachment disorders, lying, stealing, defiance of authority, and acts of violence. This is not saying that all children who are adopted will grow up to be defiant little liars who steal and hurt people. However a there have been various studies done to show that a large majority of children who find out they are adopted have one or more of the symptoms of “adopted child syndrome.”
A mother should be able to choose if she is ready to be a mother and be stable enough to raise her child. She should be aware of the health risks, and the type of environment she will be razing her child in. She should be aware of the changes that will take place in her life, and if she is a teenage mother, know that the odds are against her. If she feels that she will not be able to give her child a secure healthy life then she should have the option to abort her baby if that is what she feels is the best decision.

There is nothing good about teenage pregnancy. There are several reasons why a teenager should not have a child. First of all a teenager still needs to be nurtured so that they can grow into an adult that is confident of their abilities to take care of a child. Children require alot of attention and a teenager is not in a position to raise a child emotionally, financially or anything else at that stage in their life. As far as abortions, they should be legal because a women and the father as well should be allowed to make this choice. However, abortions should not be a form of birth control and teenagers should not be aloud to have abortions without parental consent. Part of the responsibility of a teenager is to know that when you have sex, there is a possibility that they can become pregnant, and precautions should be taken. No one should risk getting pregnant just to turn around and have an abortion.

I know there was a few people back when I was in high school who got pregnant and which everything turned out ok for them. But, they had rich parents who could afford to take take of their grandkids. The teenage parents learned nothing about responsibility and relied on their own parents to take care of their children.
Teenage pregnancy is a bad thing. Teenagers are too young to know the responsibility of raising a child. Heck, I am almost 21 and I still act like a child and I feel that everyone else is growing up too fast. Teenagers should wait till they are old enough and responsible enough to have a child, and for me means at least another 10 years! If a teenager is going to have sex, then he or she should use the proper protection methods, but everyone knows that even protection can fail.
So for abortion, I am completely pro-choice. I am sick of all the pro-lifers who say it is murder, and they have not been in that situation. Pro-lifers are often stupid and say that the only proper time to have an abortion is when a person has been raped. Well, does a rape baby not have the same rights as another baby? Ok, so I am probably getting off topic. But, I feel that if a teenager is pregnant then it is a good idea to have an abortion if they want. There are already tens of thousands of children that get moved from foster home to foster home because they were "adopted." It is hard for a teenager to get a job and later a nice job if she has a baby. Most teenagers drop out. Do we as tax payers want to pay for another person on welfare? A teenager should be allowed to live her life and get an education and have some money before she should have a baby.

Have you ever met a girl that has had a pregnancy issue? Or are you looking for emotions to go with your story? In my case....(its kinda messed up) but personally my emotions were, anger, sadness, confusion, the feeling of being lost, not knowing what i was gonna do in the future, and How am i gonna take care of myself and a baby? Well As time goes on, you do figure out that It will get easier, and you will be ok. People will forgive you and people will help you, even if you have no clue what you're doing. You will learn. Just hit me back if you have any more questions.

Personally, I'm strictly against abortion. In an age where Plan B is available (the morning after pill), I don't see WHY anyone would need to get an abortion.
On teenage pregnancy (I know, I got pregnant at 19), I personally think if you have a good job and your own place, and feel ready then you shouldn't let your age stop you.
As for NOT being ready, I think teenagers need to learn to use condoms and birth control, and if a condom breaks, call your doctor and get Plan B, which will PREVENT pregnancy, but will not, however, interfier with a pregnancy once it has already begun.

Okay, I myself have had an abortion so I can't say that I am against it. The reason for the abortion is b/c my husband (at the time) said that he would leave me and take our 3 year old son. My dumb *** fell for it and had an abortion. It was twins. =( While I was there, I overheard teenage girls talking about how it was there third or fourth time being there. That is ridiculous. I couldn't imagine every going through that pain again. I say they should be legal, but only up until a certain number of weeks and you should only be allowed to have a set number of abortions. Women are using this as a form of birth control and it is damaging their bodies.

The best way to deal with teenage pregnancy is actually adoption. Adoption is a loving, unsefish, and responsible way to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. All parties involved benefit from it. The birthparents get the benefit of not becoming parents when they feel unready, the adoptive parents get the benefit of a precious little baby to love and raise, and the baby gets the benefit of a loving, stable home. Birth moms can even choose the adoptive couple themselves if they want. There is a website where you can look at the profiles of couples who are waiting to adopt. It's www.itsaboutlove.org. When a teenage mother places her baby for adoption she can be comforted by the fact that she put the baby in a loving safe environment. She doesn't have to worry that she'll regret "killing" the baby later. Many women who abort regret it later. Hope this helps in your debate.

a child having a child is a very good way of looking at it. personal circumstance always determine a womans choice.
my belief is if a woman is legal to have sex and get pregnant she should also have a leagal right to end the pregnancy if she so wishes.
im 22 so not far off a teenager and i am 9 wks preg. i am having this child but at say 16 i would want a termination i no i was not ready then. many teens are scared and a lot dont know there bodies and are very naive about sex and pregnancy.
having all the resorces avaliable to children both taught and free acess whenever will reduce teenage pregnancy so will allowing a sexually active teenage take the pill ( my cousin started having sex at 13 and was refused the pill by a doctor cos of her age !!!! luckily no accidents.) and also encouraging its use along with regular std screening and condom use.
this is always a good starting point for teenage pregnancy.
abortion is a choice not a law!!!. not every one has to do it. laws are designed to protect and not restrict.
i assume with abortion being illegal pregnant teenages will travel further afield to have one. this is risky to health and general emotional aftercare. and obviously they will not talk about it because it is a taboo subject.
one big thing i dont like about the abortion debate is the involvement of religion. to me its judgemental.

It depends on your stand on abortion. You can try doing the following:
1. Research the statistics and rates of unwanted pregnancies in the U.S.
2. Talk about the freedom of choice (compare and contrast)
3. Research the amount of illegal abortions that have been performed and the dangers this can pose to the pregnant woman
4. Talk about the lack of sex education and misinformation that is causing the rate of teen pregnancy and young fatherhood to remain high
5. Talk about the role that parents play in their children's lives as the first teachers of sex education
6. You can also research the rate of teen pregnancy in youth in transition or youth that have been in the child welfare system
Keep in mind that abortion is not a real solution to teen pregnancy. Education our youth is key on this subject.
Good luck with your debate!

I would argue to avoid it. But if it does happen & lets be honest, it does. I would argue to consider keeping the child first & adoption second. Some people make having a child sound like being ill. I mean it would be better for the parents & the child if one waits until they're old enough to plan etc... Abortion should only be considered if the mother life is in danger.
