bettas are warm water fish that prefer temps in the mid 70's. they can stand temps in the 60's and 80's but they're moree stressed and prone to disease. this is why bettas can SURVIVE in those tiny cups, but it's not good from them, or fun. it's best to have a 5-20 gallon tank with live plans and a heater and filter. but they shouldn't be kept in less then a gallon.

Betta are tropical fish who should be kept in the 75-85 range. Below 75 they get slugish, and generally don't live as long. Below 65-70 they will die. If a house doesn't get below 70. They will do okay in a small 1/2 gallon tank. (If they get a water change every 4 days, and aren't over fed.)

PS- Keep in mind rapid temperature changes are far more lethal than a low temp.

Bettas can survive in low temperatures (65-70F). Because all bettas need to be separate, that is why you see them in petstores in little cups - it would cost the store too much to keep all the cups.
But it is not recommended to keep a betta without heat. Their immune system will be compromised and they will eventually succomb to some sort of disease. Bettas are from Thailand - the water the bettas are in, in the wild is around 80F.

And no, do NOT leave your betta light on all the time! Bettas need a night and day cycle. Get a HEATER. If you're heating your betta bowl with a lamp, get a red light.

Bettas are warm water fish, and they need to be kept in tanks that are at least one gallon. I keep mine in three gallon tanks, with heaters. My sister keeps hers in a half gallon tank without a heater. Mine are way happier than hers is, and tend to live alot longer.

Bettas are happiest, and will be most resistant to parasites, Ich, etc, when they live in a heated tank. I have one in a planted 6-gal, and another in a planted 3-gal cube tank, with heaters and small filters. Bettas who live in unheated bowls without filters can die quickly from these less-than-optimum conditions, but will thrive and be much more active with warm water.

No bettas are tropical warm water fish, although they can survive in cooler water warm is better. Ignorant people just throw them into tanks without any consideration for them.
