I used Avast for nine plus years until last week six trojans were able to get pass avast, plus the scan failed to find the trojans. I removed Avast an installed the free AOL antivirus software free for life and powered by Kaspersky Labs., rated #1 in antivirus detection. Found all six trojans and removed.

AVG is mentioned a lot. Also: www.cleanup.com www.spybot.com & www.adaware.com
www.microsoft.com Downloads has a new, free program called Windows Defender. I'm not sure about all that it can do, but it works along the lines of an antivirus program. I think that you have to have Windows XP to use it, but I'm not positive on that. Microsoft.com also has Malicious Software Removal Tool. You can download that and it scans your PC and removes worms. I think it updates once a month.
I pay about $60 a year for Panda Antivirus, and it works very good. I don't use any of the above programs. www.pandasoftware.com will scan your computer for free. I bet they find a few worms and a ton of spyware. I'm almost certain that they also remove whatever harmful viruses they find during the scan.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.
