I am pregnant and I called the hospital to schedule a prenatal appointment, but the nurse said she wont schedule me one until I have medicaid. Can they do this? I told her that I have already applied and I am waiting for a response.I have proof of my application too, and medicaid pays for bills that were made up to three months back. I really would like to see a doctor because I have no idea how far along I am and would like to know. What can I do?

You can't be denied medical service this is against the law.
Yes the medical card pays 3 months back... so there really should be no issue. Call and try to make another appt and if they won't let you I'd raise some heck!

i really dont know the laws for sure, but i dont think that they can deny u doctor care worse case they would send u a bill and then u submit it to the insurance after it has taken effect. i live in wisconsin and also have medicaid. just call a different office and schedual an appointment dont mention insurance and if they ask tell them that u have madicaid. prenatal care is important. to know how far along u are u need the first day of ur last period and each week after that count say it was on a monday the following monday would be week one. even though u techniquly had not conceived yet that is how it works. please find a doctor and schedual an appointment asap. good luck.

i had to sign up for the same sort of program here in missouri, i was specifically told by the program that i needed to wait until it was active to make an appointment with an OBGYN...but in the meantime while i was waiting for that, i went to a women's clinic, they were able to give me my first ultrasound and that gave me my first (and is still) due date. i didn't get any real doctor work done, but i was able to see my baby and figure out how far along i was.
look for some clinics in your area, planned parenthood would probably help you out. if they can't, they will most likely be able to point you in a direction where you could find somewhere to go until your medicaid is active.
Good Luck!
(31 weeks pregnant myself)

I feel for you, I too live in FL and dealt with this when I first became pregnant. It took medicaid almost 2 months to get back to me.
I think you should probably find a different dr.

Find another provider that will see you or call back and talk to someone in more authority than her. This doesn't sound right to me. I went to the doctor the day I got approved for tennCare, which is the same as medicaid. You need to call someone else or find another doctor.

It's allowed unfortunately. You have to harass the office that you applied at to speed up your app. They are supposed to give you a letter that is proof of benefits and then the doctor can see you. They're worried about getting paid just in case you don't get approved through medicaid.

***it's only against the law to deny you emergency medical services.***

Yep they can. If you have medicade then you should get a card or number. Call your case worker and get just a number if you dont want to wait for a card(you'll still get a card). If you want to, go to the emergency room, they will give you the scoop and Medi will pay it for you... The ER is often used as an early prenatle clinic, sad isnt it? Good luck.

Well, they should still see you, but they might make you sign a form saying that if the insurance doesn't end up paying for the visit, then you will be responsible for the payment yourself.

Oh, by the way, any physician can deny care at any time.

Yes they can. I don't agree with it because some doctors take a long time just to get in. I have heard people get upset about this everywhere I have lived from Ks, Ok, Co, and Az. I dealt with it personally in Ks and Ok. It sucks and all we can do is just do what they want or pay cash.

While you can't be denied medical care by a hospital due to lack of insurance or money, that is in cases of emergency only. If you want to have yourself checked before you receive your medicaid card, then go to a county care facility.
