In Greek, the language in which the New Testament was written, the word Christ begins with the letter "chi" which is written like an "x". Because of the frequency with which the word Christ appears in the NT, back when they were all handwritten, it became a tradition to abbreviate the word Christ by simply writing the chi ("X"). From there, it has come to be used for Christmas and other words the start with Christ.

X is short for Christ. People started to substitute it because the X is one of the greek letters used to write Christ.

X is the Greek letter for Chi, which i think means Christ, so it's actually not irreligious

i've heard the first explanation, and I've also heard it's because the X looks like the cross that Christ was crucified on. I don't know how accurate that is though.

I don't know but it pisses me off. If you aren't Christian, you shouldn't celebrate Christmas - it's a religious holiday. Not saying you meaning you specifically, but people in general.

People who believe in Christ don't want to offend people who don't, so just replace 'Christ' with 'X'.
