He should go on a diet and exercise. It would take time, but problem solved right there.

I don't know how tall he is but 165 does not sound overweight to me. If he is 5'7" or taller he should be okay. Don't allow him to put himself down in your presence. When he makes a joke about himself or puts himself down ask him "Why do you always do that?" Help him to focus on his good qualities. Offer to be his exercise buddy and do not eat fries and candy and such in his presence. Do not nag him about his weight. tell him that the most important thing is for him to be happy and healthy. He should not give up making healthy food choices even he doesn't lose a pound. It will still benefit him.

Hi there... I'm a freelance writer, and I just did a very in depth article on obesity and overweight in America. In that article it talks about a lot of non-eating causes for obesity, including listing all sorts of over the counter medications and prescription medications that can actually make it impossible to lose weight or even make you gain weight...
Heart burn medications can, and believe it or not, so can Benadryl if it's taken regularly.
If you're interested in reading the research I've done - don't worry it's written in an interesting and easy to read manner, nothing medical/technical - then you can click the link below and read about it. Let me know what you and your friend think if it helps him any.

I agree with the previous users. Tell him to stop putting himself down and work harder to lose weight. And yes he should see a doctor. Doctors can give him a certain diet to follow and excersises that fit his body type and stuff like that. The mre he puts himself down the more he will be discouraged to lose the weight.

If you two are close friends and you spend a lot of time together, try doing healthy things with him like walking/jogging together and eating out at restaurants that have healthy food choices. He can gain lots of encouragement if he knew that he had someone to go through eveything with him. Support him by doing healthy things with him. This should help.
Good luck!

How about go to the gym with him, working out with other people is always more fun then working out alone, and be super encouraging for him to improve what he eats like if you go out to lunch together don't get a double bacon burger if he gets a salad or something (I know that sounds aweful but it sucks when someone does that)

I use to be almost 300lbs..I found out I have diabetes and had to be out on a diabetic diet...That was 6 months ago...since I have lost over 50lbs. Tell your friend to check http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp for great meals and help. I hope this works. I had also tried everything I could. It works for me so it should for him.

Trying going on a diet (just eating the correct portions and eating healthily) with him and working out together. that way he knows that he has your encouragement and it will be easier for him to stay with this plan. eating correctly and working out is the best way to lose weight. try running and cardio.

Exercise with him. It may be easier for him to get exercise if he has company. Get involved in a sport or gym together.
