The actual answer is already given... the serious, intelligent answer re the 50 United States and the Territories the US protects, officially. If memory serves, Hawaii was the last state to have joined the Union. They were a protectorate until oficially being named a State by Congress.

My understanding is that there is a very specific list of requirements re Statehood. Should find the information readily thru services like ask.com and similar sites.

Although the statehood program is, by legislation, intended to include only the 50 states, legislation has been introduced four times in Congress to extend the program an additional year to include the District of Columbia, the Commonwealths of Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. territories of Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa. During the 106th, 107th, and 108th Congresses, these bills had passed through the House of Representatives, and even had 34 Senate sponsors for the Senate bill during the 108th. As of August 2006, this legislation had not reached a floor vote for the 109th Congress.

we have 50 states. 48 in the lower 48 or the mainland of the usa. two state hawaii and alaska are not attached to the lower 48.

we have several territories with puerto rico and the us virgin islands being just two of them.
