The reason people voted for the patriot act was because they felt vulnerable. therefore that statement can not be valid. and people voted for the Democrats this past election because they are sick and tired of this war in Iraq and the Democrats can put pressure on Bush to make some changes. Now i dont think Bush will make any changes in Iraq in the last 2 or so years of his term but it will hurt his party and the Democrats will win the Presidential Election in 2 years. I really dont believe that the United States can have a third party. The last time there were three major parties the south felt they were not being represented and secceded from the union and i dont think anyone wants that. In this day and age no one can have everything they want they have to win some and lose some.

The answer is quite simple. In the aftermath of September 11, the nation was put into a patriotic frenzy and people were itching to put the hurt on the terrorists (Like in Nazi Germany after the Reichstag was burned). Bush decided to put forward the Patriot Act to get the terrorists. (Like Hitler after the Reichstag incident) Democrats and Republicans went along with it because not doing so would seem cowardly and unpatriotic (Like the government of Germany) and gave more power to Bush. (you get the point yet?)
However, Democrats have since realized their mistake and have made it known that they have. They're still a crooked party, but NOWHERE near how corrupt the Repulicans are right now. I personally despise the two-party system. I think voters voted Democrat because they're not Republicans. Independent Green forever.
However, The Iraq war thing was based on "faulty evidence" given by the slimebag known as Chalabi. He just wanted Saddam out because he wanted his throne. We were fools to rush in like that. However, with the information that we had at the time, it seemed like the right choice. Confirming the evidence would have been a better step, but people were afraid of another 9/11 (fear tactics) so we decided not to wait.
I was against the war personally from the beginning because I'm a cautious kind of person. Democrats really dropped the ball at that time (probably because they were still the Republican's prison b*tch).
Point is, if you don't remember history's lessons, it's bound to happen again. We always have to be vigilant citizens. We have the power to stop anything we don't want to happen if we muster up enough support. Your vote is both a weapon and a shield. Use it.
On another note, not all Republicans are bad. Just the ones that play to the radical Evangelical base, take gifts from lobbyists, and denounce scientific fact as pish-posh are the ones that sicken me. Stick to your values Republicans! What happened to small government? What happened to less government interference in people's lives (gay marriage ban, anyone?) and beliefs in fiscal responsibility (runaway spending)? Get yourselves together!

the only reason that democrats voted for the patriot act is because they were swept away in the overwhelming patriotism immdeiately following 9-11, they hurridly pushed the bill through just go get it over with. That is the reason the patriot act had an expiratoin clause, so that it could be discussed more leisurely at a later time.

Because at least there is more of a chance that with democrats in everything might go into gridlock which is so much better then free spending that's has been going on for the last 8 years. We might end up with a lame duck congress much better then the free spending willy which we will sooner or later have to pay back.
Balance is needed. Doesn't matter where balance is needed in everything.

There are more than 3 I believe. The obvious one is Independent. I forget what the other ones are. Anyway, we vote for the Democrats and other horrible people because one-fourth of the US are retards. As for the others, morons. This is a country that is literally full of idiots.

Yes America could use a third party.
We voted for Democrats as a protest for the the utterly crap job Bush and his cronies are doing right now. People wanted less of Bush's crap, and to reduce his power. Thank goodness they voted that way.

A third party is welcome to start up. The republicans got snagged in their bag of lies. The democrats pointed their fingers. Enough said.
