I had to take a glucose test this morning, and I know I had to fast, but they told me no water iether, not even a sip for 12 hours before. All the websites I see you can drink water. With my first kid i took the same test, and was allowed water. Were any of you allowed or banned drinking water?
If your a med student, nurse or doc, I want to know why I couldnt drink water, I dont see how it could effect the test.
I asked my nurse and she said "it's the rules"

In South Australia things seem to be different.
I had my glucose test recently and the rules had changed from four years ago.
We are now allowed to drink water and are advised to eat our normal breakfast before we come in. I think they must have had trouble with pregnant women fainting, feeling sick etc.
My understanding of the test is that it measures the speed that the sugar in the blood decreases. Sugar now as opposed to sugar later and that it doesn't matter how much sugar is there in the first place as long as the amount decreases at an expected "normal" rate.
Therefore I don't see how it can be that important wether or not you drink water 12 hours before (except that it might lower the amount of sugar in your blood stream after the glucose drink).
Surely it is irresponsible to tell a pregnant woman she cant drink water for 12 hours.
Sorry I'm not a doctor but I figure if all Australian pregnant women are now allowed to eat and drink before the test then it must be ok... bad reasoning I know...
any way
Good Luck, hope you aren't diabetic,
Cheers,
Ruby

I was told no water. I did drink a little, though, because my throat gets so dry during the night otherwise.
The idea is that the water dilutes your blood, I think. I hate the glucose test! I failed it, too, but I refused the three hour. My doctor said they'd just check my glucose when I came in for appointments a few times.

Thats aload of rubbish, they should not have told u no water for 12hrs thats not safe for u or your child! My last pregnancy 14mths ago i had 3 of the 3hr tests cause my daughter was so big, and not once was i told to not drink water if anything i was told to drink lots of water as i wasn't allowed to eat! i would have told the nurse to shove it. sorry i no thats pretty nasty but when it comes to things like that it really gets up my nose. u should have drunk water and they would never have known!
