If your headlights and accessories are working fine then it may be an alarm ignition cutoff. Otherwise its charging system. Most alarms will go off when they get a new power source so it seems the battery was dead. When you put the cables on the alarm sounds off from being reactivated by a new power source. It don't take much power to set off alarms but it takes a lot to start vehicle. But why is battery dead? you can get charging system help from the auto blog below under articles tab

If you have an aftermarket alarm system then good luck to you. There will be no wiring diagram for it and even if there were, even with the same system it seems no two are ever installed in exactly the same way. It can take many, many, many hours to undo the damage done by wayward aftermarket alarms. I will never, ever, put one in a vehicle of mine.
