The people of Pompeii did not know Vesuvius was a volcano. They had no experience of what volcanoes can do.
Now we know what they can do, and we have monitoring equipment that can warn of a major eruption. Naples would be evacuated if Vesuvius ever got really active.

As an active volcano it regularly throws little eruptions and seismic tremors. No one has any idea about when it will erupt again.
If it does erupt everyone need to get out fast. Not because of the blast or firework show but because it is prone to pyroclastic flows. These throw thousands of tons of boiling hot rock dust and other debris flying down the mountain at tremendous speed.
Arriving at the lower slopes it would quickly cover and smother people, suffocating them and burning them at the same time.
There is also a more insidious risk. Pyroclastic flows that fall back into the volcano can be ejected as much finer particles which can spread for many miles around and would be far more likely to cause lung cancer if breathed in than asbestos ever could!

Pompeii is an open museum and architectural dig, not a modern permanent city. The nearby large city of Naples, on the other hand, needs to be prepared for a mass evacuation if Vesuvius blows its top. The mountain is quiet at the moment, but historically has been very active, and could "wake up" any time.
