PLZZ HELP ME ITS FOR MY HOMEWORK AND I DONT UNDERSTAND IT!!!ITS PART OF THE PERIODIC TABLE THAT I TOTALLY DONT UNDERSTAND!! THXX SO MUCH!!

I think there are a number of reasons, but the one I remember off-hand is that group are considered alkili earth metals, and hydrogen is a gas. Hope that helps.

Hydrogen is like the Group I Metals in that is easily loses an electron. It is unlike the Group 1 Metals in that it is not a metal, and that it acts like Group VII (or Group 17) gases when it gains an electron. This it due to the fact that the first electron shell can contain 0, 1 or 2 electrons, and that when it contains 1 it is unstable and wants to ionize by emptying or filling its shell.
