I always thought evolution was a fact. I believe in it but I dont get why some people don't...I mean evolution has been proved and it's pretty logical...right?
If you don't believe in evolution or if you know why some people don't believe in it I would like to know why.
thanks in advance

Wow! I had no idea that people take the creation story literal. I thought it was just a story.

Well, there is a lot more to back up evolution than creationism, but some people just have a really hard time accepting how much genetics proves as far as evolution goes. Sorry, we weren't just here all of a sudden; we developed over a long period of time.
An interesting thing to note is that only 23% of the US believes in evolution, and only 42% of college grads believe in it. I blame it on bad science education in this country, since most of the rest of the developed world accepted evolution LAST CENTURY.
According to the polls, Europeans are alarmed that we haven't yet accepted evolution as fact since their belief numbers were roughly the same as in the US now in the late eighteen hundreds (around 1870).
Another interesting tidbit is that kids who transfer to public schools from private Christian schools actually resent their old schools for not educating them about real biology!
Face it people, evolution is real, it did happen, and the sooner you accept it, the sooner the rest of us can stop taking aspirin for the headaches you give us.

The thing is, we don't know for sure. Evolution is a theory. So is creationism. Most of the evidences for evolution are circumstantial. The argument for creationism is that the universe is too orderly to be formed randomly, without the help of a supreme power or energy.

However, this does not mean that we can assertain that the universe was formed by creationism. The greatness of science is that it does not ignore the fact that creationism might be true, but religion preaches not to believe in evolution, even though it might be true. Evolutionists are trying to explain our existence through a methodical way, and who knows, one day, they might end up proving or disproving creationism. But creationists are holding on to the one argument they have without trying to prove their point by employing a proper scientific methodology.

Just because it's pretty logical doesn't mean necessarily it is true. I think it's more of a Darwinism vs. everything else thing. People think Darwinism is evolution. It is not. It's merely one theory of evolution. There are other theories of evolution, but people are the most focused on Darwinism. There is some problems with Darwinism. It focuses almost solely on benefical mutants. There has been very few, if any, cases of benefical mutants happening spontaneously. Also, in evolution, people see similar (extinct) animals and automatically concludes that one must have evolved from the other when other evidence (rib count, bone structure) disproves that.

I think it has a lot to do with people being taught something that's not true (creationism) over and over again by many, many people (their parents, their relatives, their pastor and Sunday school teachers, their teachers even if they go to a religious school), making it hard for them to understand that it might not be true.

We tend to believe what we were brought up to believe and if people change their beliefs it tends to be later on in their lives when they have a chance to examine them properly.

In effect: people have been brainwashed into believing in creationism. Just as they have been brainwashed into believing that Jesus is the son of God or that God watches them and puts a little black mark next to their name each time they do something wrong. People are generally Christians because they grew up with Christian parents. They are Muslims generally because they grew up in Muslim families. And they believe in the nonsense that is Creationism because they were brought up to believe this by their parents, who also believed it to be true. For these reason, if the book of Genesis had said that the earth was created by a giant hyper-intelligent turtle on a teabreak, some people might very well still believe that today, too.

Unfortunately, many Christians (and other religious people) also teach their followers that it's wrong to doubt, so this makes it all the more difficult for them to come to the conclusion that the things they were raised to believe may actually be false.

I grew up very religious, so I know this to be true firsthand.

Additionally, you have folks like pzratnog above who think they understand evolution, but really haven't read anything about evolution and are merely regurgitating inaccurate information they have heard elsewhere. Evolution is extraordinarily well proven and more and more proof is found every day. There are millions upon millions of points of data which prove evolution. And how many to prove God created the earth in 7 days? ZERO. I would advise pzratnog and company to go read a book by someone who actually understands evolution: try Stephen Jay Gould or Richard Dawkins, either of whom know infinitely more about evolution than the religious people like Michael Behe who have been discredited again and again and again.

Finally, yes, evolution is a theory. So is gravity. It takes a lot for something to qualify as a theory. A theory has to be testable, and verifiable. So for something to qualify as a theory is a very big deal indeed.

"God created the earth" does not even qualify as a theory because it cannot be tested or verified.

Evolution may be based in scientific fact, but that's where the two schools of thought collide. Major religions such as Christianity, Catholisim, Judiasm and Islam believe that the universe was created by a god, and evolution teachs us that we are descendants of monkeys with no "divine" creation. It is basically a Science versus Religion debate. good luck trying to figure out which one is right!

Evolution is neither proven, nor is it a logical assumption.

Evolution...apes to people.....pleaze..why do we still have apes and people running around? Are the apes going to continue to evolve. And, what are people going to evolve into next? Is it a continuous cycle?

Also, the big bang theory. Do you really believe that there was an explosion and everything fell into place just perfectly right? Like the sun being perfect distance from the earth. The galaxies, everything in order. You cannot get order from kaos. Example...when a bomb goes off, everything is destroyed..disarrayed...no order there!

Also, do you really believe that you came from a big mass of SOUP????? What are you? A Noodle?

Be reasonable... be logical....be intelligent. An Intelligent Being, God, our Creator, created you and I and the universe. An intelligent Being could only create other intelligent Beings. In His image, okay?

The reason you do not believe is because you don't want to be accountable.

Basically, is another view called ''Creation'', that is a staple in the religion of Christianity. They cling to the fact that god created the earth in 7 days about 6,000 years ago. They belive that evolution is a worldly and sinfill way of looking at our existance. They do not belive in evolution becasue they see that there is a lack of evidence, (I.E. The missing link) and they think that it defys common sence that we evolved from single-celled organisims.
Hoped this helped awnser your question.

Evolution is a test God gave us.

Creationism or Evolution. It's a big challenge.

If you have ever read the first book of the Bible, Genesis you would know that Christians know God created everything on the Earth including the People and the Animals.

Evolution is a good theory if you are the type of person that believes solely in science and having to prove everything. Personally, I do not think that evolution adds up (doesn't make any sense). It's like those individuals that believe in the big bang theory. Who do you think created the black hole that created the big bang? It's just like the argument - who created man? God and only god!

I do not believe in evolution, and as far as it being logical I do not think so. Imagine the fact that in order for a specific species to evolve they need to evolve with select abilities or forms of themselves through natural selection, or survival of the fittest. In that process, let's say an aquatic animal developing legs in order to survive on land, does not develop all 4 legs or limbs at the same time it develops lungs instead of gills, if you have done any statistics then you must know that the probability becomes very very high. Also consider the fact that species must mate in order to preserve themselves. Consider that in order for the human race to evolve from apes as it is believed they did, at least two humans, from a female and a male sex, must both evolve within the same time period in order to preserve the species. Today we do not see the patterns of evolution ocurring as was once supposed to have occurred. Even in the last 2000 years of recorded history have we not found any examples. Consider that no missing links have been found, supposedly linking the evolutionary chart between ape and human. Consider the fact that the geological chart that was given in order to prove evolution does not appear anywhere on this planet, not in the exact order that was given. There are many FACTS that have led me to believe that evolution is just a theory, not a proven fact. If you are thinking about carbon dating, consider the fact that tests have ocurred, in which mollusks found in the shallow parts of the ocean have been tested and found to be over 5 million years old, yet they were born and died within months. For me evolution is as much a religion as any other, and that it has to be accepted by faith. Also I never followed the logic in which the world as we know it, in all its symmetry, order and beauty came from a dot of matter, the size of a dot in this page. I find it hard to believe that through evolution we just happen to be the 3rd planet from the sun, not anywhere nearer or farther apart from the sun, in which case we would either burn, or freeze to death. I find it hard to believe that through evolution we have water to drink, fruits and vegetables to drink. If we have evolved then why is nothing evolving anymore? How do we account for the deep emotional and psychoelemental feelings that we have. Do they really all come just from chemical imbalances and reactions within our bodies and our brain. Where does our account for the realization of SELF, for the introspection that we all seem to have, for the knowledge that we exists, for the use of mercy, or grace, of empathy and sympathy for others, for the selflessness with which we live, for the accounts of self-sacrifice in order to achieve a greater good, is that all really just chemicals?

One has to wonder, and for me evolution does not fully explain or yet satisfy the thoughts in my mind.
