Iain M Banks any of his books are worth a read especially the ones about "The Culture" Try M P Shiel or John Christopher as the thinking persons alternative to John Wyndham.

That is a tough choice between Stephen Spielberg and James Cameron. I liked spielbergs Jurassic park but I loved Camerons Terminator better, so its a close call but I will go with James on this one.
PS: These guys are directors so I dunno if they would count as writers? If not then I will say J.K.Rowling or Tolken. But for the same reason as above I go with Rowling.
