Displacement is a vector quantity, meaning it has both a measurement and direction, for example 10 miles north. It has a measurement, 10 miles, and direction, North. If I was to look at a map, and I wanted to find the distance driving from Chicago to New York, I waould look at a road map and determine how many miles I would have to drive along each of the roads. That is distance. To find the displacement, I would draw a straight line between the two and measure that. It does not matter the twists and turns in between.

Displacement means the distance from where the object is now to where it used to be. Displacement is always positive, so it would be like if you took a meter stick and found the distance between start and end. And it doesn't matter what the object did in between, just start and finish matter.

@ Kacky:

You're right, but that's the other definition. This one is when dealing with velocities and distances.

It's what has to move in order to make room for you. Like a boat will displace so many tons of water. Or a flood will displace so many families. Or sitting on the couch will displace 3 cats (in my house)
